ASHEVILLE, NC — Scott Wallace drove around the Hunter Volvo dealership
off Patton Avenue with gleeful abandon Wednesday afternoon as he demonstrated
the attributes of the Wheego LiFe, an electric car.
“We're on the cutting edge with this vehicle,” the salesman said.
The Hunter Automotive Group
, based in Asheville, is the first in North Carolina,
South Carolina and Tennessee to offer the vehicles, which are made in the U.S.
and run totally on electric power, said Scott Laffin, general sales manager of
Hunter Volvo. The cars have been on the lot only a week, but already there is a lot
of interest in them, he said.
“We see Wheego LiFe as a tremendous opportunity to serve the environmentally
conscious people in Western North Carolina and look forward to a long-lasting
partnership,” Laffin said.
The Wheego LiFe can operate for about 100 miles on a single charge and sells
for $35,990. There is currently a tax credit of $7,500 for purchasing the Wheego.
The cars run off a 115V lithium battery pack that can be charged from a standard
120V outlet, a 240V outlet or any of the J1772 standard charging stations being
installed in public locations throughout the U.S.
The vehicles can seat two people and come fully equipped with driver and passenger
air bags, anti-lock brakes, power windows and locks. The cars are available in red,
white, black, silver, blue and green. Air conditioning is optional, Laffin said.
The subcompact cars are assembled in Ontario, Calif. The company headquarters
are in Atlanta, Ga.
“The appeal is the green, no emissions reduction of a carbon footprint and you can
plug it in anywhere,” he said.
Asheville is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the current electric car trend,
thanks to a $500,000 federal grant awarded to the city, said Wheego CEO Mike McQuary.
Wheego electric cars are establishing themselves through the integration of advanced
technology components, making it one of the first EV companies to deliver fully
capable, street legal all-electric cars for everyday consumer use, he added.
“We are excited to bring the Wheego LiFe to Western North Carolina,” McQuary said.
